Your Learning Preferences
One step in becoming a more effective learner is to know yourself as
a learner:
- how you prefer to learn
- what kinds of learning situations or activities frustrate you
You can use this self-knowledge to work with your strengths and weaknesses
to become a successful learner. Knowing your own learning preferences
will help you to know when it might be a good idea to make changes in
your learning approach, especially when you are feeling frustrated or
are not getting the results you want.
Click on the Index
of Learning Styles Inventory link and complete the ILS questionnaire.
This site provides you with two options: you can scroll down and click
on the ILS questionnaire - Web version to complete it online, or you can
click on the ILS questionnaire - paper and pencil version and print out
the questionnaire to complete it. Once you have completed the ILS questionnaire,
click on the " Descriptions of the learning styles "
link to learn on how to use your knowledge of your learning preferences
to your advantage while studying.
The ILS inventory is only one of many learning styles inventories. Each
system is slightly different, but all tools that are used to categorize
learning styles should be used as a guide to explore your learning abilities.
If you are an active learner, it doesn't mean you can't learn by reading
a book, listening to a lecture, or watching a video. Successful learners
use several learning styles and switch to another style if the first one
isn't working for them.
