Personal Learning Goals

Activity

Identify your personal learning goals for taking an online course. Are your goals measurable? How will you know if you've achieved them?

Write your goals as precise, positive statements that include dates, times, and amounts. For example:

I will learn basic interview strategies and practise at least twice before the end of the course, so I will be able to do a better job of interviewing clients at work about their needs.

Identify steps you will need to do to achieve your goals.

Using our example, to reach your overall goal you could do the following steps:

  1. Read course material on interview strategies and take notes.

  2. Watch recommended video demonstrating interview techniques.

  3. Prepare a set of interview questions.

  4. Arrange to practise interviewing with two volunteers.

  5. Tape- or video-record one interview to get instructor feedback.

  6. Summarize what you've learned in your notes.

  7. Try using your new knowledge at work and reflect on your experience.

How will you assess your progress? Some questions to help you assess your personal learning goals are:

What skills do I need to achieve this?

What information and knowledge do I need?

What help do I need?

What resources do I need?

What can block my progress?

What approach(s) will I use to achieve my goals?

When or how often should I revisit my goals (and change them if necessary)?
