Using a Web Browser

This module is for new computer users who want to feel more comfortable with their computer skills before they take an online course. To take an online course, you will need to have an Internet connection and be able to use a Web browser. We will give you information on Internet connections, including what kinds of connections are available and what to look for when choosing an Internet service provider (ISP).

Even if you already have an Internet connection, it is helpful for you to know about the Internet service you have on your own computer. Click here to complete a fact sheet about your own computer's Internet set-up and service plan.

If you need to download a newer version of Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator (two of the most common Web browsers), we will guide you through the process and give you step-by-step instruction on how to set up your browser to work with WebCT, the software used to deliver online courses.

And we'll walk you through basic browser features that you'll need to know how to use to take an online course or just to surf the Internet.

What is a Web browser?

A Web browser (commonly called a browser) is a software application used to locate and display pages on the World Wide web. The two most popular browsers are Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Internet Explorer. Both browsers are available free and are now included when you buy a new computer. Both of these are graphical browsers, which means that they can display graphics as well as text. In addition, these browsers can present multimedia information, including music or sounds and videos or animated pictures, although they require plug-ins (additional programs) for some formats.

Why do I need to use a Browser?

A browser is required to access information on webpages. The World Wide WebClick to enlarge is able to connect pages to one another with hyperlinks. A click on a hyperlink can take you to a site located across the world. When you type in a URL (uniform resource locator), the webpage address, the browser will display the webpage on your computer.
